About Our School

Our school dates back to 1961, when it was founded by Les Mayo, a former U.S. Marine who trained in martial arts while stationed on the island of Okinawa. In 1968, John Izzo became co-owner of the school and renamed it to "John Izzo's Okinawan Karate". In 2003, Mr. Izzo transferred ownership of his school over to his student, Gerald McGinnis and it was renamed to the "Academy of Okinawan Karate & Kung-Fu".

To this day, the school remains under the ownership of Mr. McGinnis. We are devoted to our students and we provide them with the ability to defend themselves should the need ever arise. Additionally, we cater to those with special needs and work closely with children to ensure that they build focus and confidence within themselves.

Located at the former Pit Bull Gym on Mohawk Avenue near the Scotia Theater with both street level and private lot parking provided. We invite you to visit our school and speak with us about starting or continuing your education in the martial arts.
